SAVER.DOC
The Saver program is a unique combination of a screen
"saver" and data "saver" utility. Overall, the Saver program
is a utility that many people will find themselves using at
least on a daily basis. I have also included another similar
program MyLock for users without the screen saver need. Tsaver,
also in this package also acts as a screen saver in that it
blanks the display.
Saver requires that you have a video card capable of
graphics. The Saver program recognizes and uses active video
modes of VGA, EGA, CGA and Hercules. This program will work
with a MDA adapter. However, there will be no graphics output
in MDA mode. Saver has been tested for VGA, CGA, and Hercules
modes. The program has also been tuned for 386-16Mhz systems
with VGA graphics.
The user uses command line parameters to invoke Saver.
The parameters given are prompt, password, and attempts to allow.
The prompt parameter is limited to approximately 76 characters in length,
this is accomplished by "quoting" off of the prompt. Currently, the
password is limited to 8 characters. The size of attempts is limited to 65535.
If you enter an attempts less than or equal to 0 then an infinite number
of attempts are allowed, for example -1.
Following are some example parameters:
saver -p"access code: " -ktest -a 10
saver -ptest: -ktest. -a 100
saver -p"password: " -kkod88! -a 5
saver -p"Access Code:" -k test -a-1
Now that we have invoked the program what will happen is that the
display will be switched to a graphics mode and a circle will
start moving across the display from left to right in a sine wave
motion. When the circle hits the right edge it will start again
from the left edge. This will continue until the user depresses
the alt key and the right shift keys of the keyboard. (In this
manner your monitor can be left running without worry of "burn in.")
Whereupon the display will change to a text mode and the
users prompt will be displayed. Then the user has attempts
number of times to correctly enter the password.
If the password is not correctly entered an Access Denied message
will be displayed on screen within a red window with blinking
bright white text. Also an audible alarm sound will start.
This is a good program to run when you have to leave your
work station for a brief period of time. For instance, you have
to speak with your manager in his office a few minutes. Maybe
you have a daily conference to attend and do not want to power
cycle your computer.
